Energy Optimizers, USA is proud to present Eaton High School senior, Burke Halderman, with the 2013-2014 Youth Energy Leadership Award, a unique scholarship opportunity that is offered to promising students interested in pursuing post-secondary education in a STEM (Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics) related field of study. “Awarding scholarships like this speaks to our mission as a company,” says Greg Smith, President of Energy Optimizers, USA. “Fostering energy education in the K-12 schools that we serve is not only a benefit to students and teachers, it assists us in meeting our mission while promoting STEM education.”
With only one out of every five students having access to STEM-related extra-curricular activities, Smith saw the opportunity to provide students and teachers with funding and educational resources for STEM endeavors that involve green energy education and promoting energy conservation measures. These student-based groups called “Green Teams” are implemented in tandem with providing schools the cost-saving, energy conservation projects implemented by Energy Optimizers, USA. The Eaton Community Schools energy conservation project, implemented in 2011, included lighting retrofits, advanced building controls, solar thermal and solar PV systems, and kitchen exhaust retrofits, resulting in an annual $287,535 in energy cost savings.
The Youth Leadership Award, a $2,500 scholarship funded by Energy Optimizers, USA, was awarded to Halderman because of his exceptional academic performance, leadership abilities, commitment to his local community, and post-secondary interests. Halderman, founder and captain of Eaton High School’s FIRST Robotics League, plans to attend Miami University this fall to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
“We are thrilled to help cultivate the next generation of innovators,” states Smith, “I am eager to hear about Burke’s success at Miami University and future career endeavors.” Halderman’s ultimate career goal: to work for NASA as an astronaut, proving STEM education can quite literally recognize out-of-this-world childhood dreams.
